Performance
This is a very un-imposing looking heatsink/fan combo. Yes it's a Y.S. Tech fan but it puts out a very good 38cfm. It's rated at 42.5 db and that's in the neighborhood of the much louder Delta fans, but it really isn't THAT loud at all. Compare that to say the 6800rpm lawnmower fan on the Vantec 6035D which also puts put 38cfm but with a much louder annoying high pitch sound. Those of you that have similar fans know what I mean. This fan has no annoying high-pitched sound. Then we consider the solid round copper core and here we may have a very good cpu cooler.
Test System-
- Epox 8KTA3
- Tbird 1.4
- 768mb pc133 c2
- Maxtor ata100 7200rpm hd +90
- Radeon 64mb Vivo
- live value
Testing was done with the tbird 1.4 @ 1.4 and at 1.6. Idle temps were taken after booting and standing for 15 minutes. Full load was achieved from Playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein at 1600x1200x32 with all the toys on for 45 minutes. Ambient temp was maintained at 69 degrees. Da results:

Rather shocking isn't it. In fact I was almost positive my initial readings were false so I reinstalled the Dr Thermal 3-4 more times to be sure. For a mostly all aluminum heatsink this is most eggselent. But it's mainly the solid copper core along with the very good cfm output fan that does the most work here along with the unique design of the aluminum heatsink. The copper core is thicker and more copper than those heatsinks that simply use a mostly flat copper insert. This one is round and tall. About 3/4 inch in diameter and 1 inch tall, all solid copper. It obsorbs the initial heat so well the aluminum heatsink is always barely warm to the touch.
Conclusion
I'm still in awe of this heatsink because of how surprisingly good it really is. Just doesn't have that "look" of a good cpu cooler especially one for an overclocker. Of course "looks" isn't everything as we all know. The 38cfm fan is also very quiet, doesn't have that high-pitched sound that most Delta fans have. Just a pleasant humm, similar to a power supply fan. Has just the one clip but since it's lightweight and considering how well the tension bar secures it, it's enough.
Pros-
- Does it's intended job and does it very well, even for an overclocker
- Fan is quiet, no need to purchase a quieter one
- lightweight when compared to most other all-copper heatsinks
- The tension bar and connections work well, it's very secure
Cons-
- No "cool looks" like certain other heatsinks
- Wider than most heatsinks so may not fit all mobo's
- no 3 prong clip
With our PCA rating scale I give it a:
< 9 out of 10 >
* PC Abuser Choice! *
*Please note revised rating from 8.8. Dummy me deducted initial points because I thought using the clip was too hard. It's because after I took it apart I put it back together the wrong way. When assembled correctly the clip is real easy to use. I learned this after taking it apart again then realized what I had done.
Thanks again to the friendly people from Highspeed PC for supplying us with this unique cpu cooler. Direct link to Dr Thermal
