When I first heard "Speed Up My PC" I thought, "Great, this will boost my 3D Mark Scores, and make my DSL connection faster!" Thinking this program would boost my performance at least marginally, I ran a bunch of benchmarks, consisting of the following, DSLReports.com Speed Test, SiSoft Sandra Memory Bandwidth test, SiSoft Sandra CPU Tests, SiSoft Sandra Network/LAN Bandwidth test, and even 3D Mark 2001 SE. After running all these benchmarks, I installed the program and ran them again. I was astonished to find that the resulting differences in benchmark scores were slim to none. It wasn't until I took a closer look at the program that I realized SpeedUpMyPC wasn't suppose to do what I thought. Instead, it was meant to manage CPU resources, free up ram, and prevent crashes. It was also meant to speed up internet connections. All the benchmarks I ran either lowered or rasied after installing SpeedUpMyPC, but the results were all within the margin of error, making them pretty much useless. I cannot stress enough that I was wrong. I misintrepretted what this program was meant to do, so don't become instantly uninterested right away.
.
I tested SpeedUpMyPC on the following computer:
- AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1733 MHz) @ 1924 MHz (148x13)
- Gigabyte 7DXR
- 1 Gigabyte of Corsair PC3200LLPT
- Qwest DSL Connection 640 kbps down / 240 kbps up
As you can see above, I really don't have a huge need for my ram to be cleared. I have yet to use all of my ram at any time, even when playing games. I believe that is one main reason why I didn't notice a huge improvement using SpeedUpMyPC.
Does SpeedUpMyPC "Free Up Valuable System resources"? - Yes. It does. Memory and Page Files are important resources for the computer. When a person doesn't have a huge amount of memory, they need to make sure to manage it efficiently, otherwise they'll run into major problems. SpeedUpMyPC does what its suppose to do, by helping the user keep his/her ram usage below a certain percentage!
Does SpeedUpMyPC "Optimize my Internet Connection"? - Unfortunately, I don't have the resources avilable to test this. I think my computer was already optimized for my DSL connection. Running speed tests before and after installation showed no changes what-so-ever (yes, I did optimize my internet connection). I believe it would speed up dail-up connections, because optimizations usually do help gain a bit more speed. But, overall, I just cannot answer this accurately.
Does SpeedUpMyPC "Maximize Performance and Avoid Crashes"? - For those with a limited amount of CPU power and a small amount of ram, yes, I am confident SpeedUpMyPC will maximize your performance. The problem with my situation is that my computer is already very powerful, and having a program manage my memory doesn't boost performance. Also, the ability to avoid crashes is there. I, again, never really experience any crashes. If I do, they are heat or overclocking related. Crashes, as stated by LIUtilities are usualy caused by resources becoming overused, and programs lock up because they have no resources to use, I never have problems like that with this computer.
Conclusion
What it ultimately comes down to is, "Does SpeedUpMyPC do exactly what it is suppose to do?". The answer is Yes. It does everything's it's suppose to do. The program is very easy to use, even for those that know almost nothing about computers. The online manual is also very useful for those that don't know where to begin. SpeedUpMyPC also includes a very cool Startup section, letting you monitor startup times, and choose what you want to be loaded, just adding to its variety of features. I am confident that SpeedUpMyPC will do what it is suppose to do for those that need it the most.
Pros:
- Does what it is advertised to do
- Does it with a cool interface
- Very easy to follow and use for even the most novice computer user
- Has option to monitor and control Startup times
Cons:
- Can be a bit pricey
- Not needed if your computer is already very fast
OVERALL RATING: 7/10
