Thermalright SLK-947U Review

Comparing the SLK-900U and the SLK-947U

Before I did anything else, I wanted to see how this heatsink looked next to it's older brother, the SLK-900U.

947U    -    900U

As seen in the above picture, the two heatsinks are very similar. The most obvious difference is the arc coming from the top down to the base. It is more rounded on the 947U than on the 900U. This slight change makes it a lot easier to fit the heatsink on motherboards it didn't fit on before. You may also notice that the SLK-900U is just a little bit wider than the SLK-947U as well. Not a major difference, but a difference nonetheless.

900U    -    947U

The base of the 947U, as seen above to the right, is also a tad bit wider than the base of the 900U. I'm not quite sure why this change was made - but it is still too narrow to reach the stock processor pads. So, the included pads are still required for the installation of the heatsink.

Finally, the last difference I noticed was the clip surrounding the heatsink. On the 900U, the clip was cut down to as small as possible - to save space. Whereas the clip around the 947U has been made big enough to be able to install in a P4 system without the extra metal brackets, which had to be used on the 900U.

A Closer Look

Just like the SLK-900U, the SLK-947U weighs well over 550 grams. Every single piece of this monster has been made of copper and it could be easily considered a core crusher, if installed incorrectly!

As seen in the above pictures - Thermalright has done another great job making a very high quality heatsink. I was pleased to find that the base of the SLK-947U did not have nearly as many machining marks as my SLK-900U, which had marks that were easily felt with my fingernail. The base has some very nice reflective properties to it as well - and we all love that, now don't we.
