The rheostat is the last option you have to control this fan. To use this you must remove the jumper from the temp probe connector. The rheostat will hook up to the other 2 pin connector. It is impossible to hook these up wrong as each connector is a different type so its is self explanatory on which one hooks up where. Once this is hooked up you can control the speed of the fan manually. If wide open is too loud for your ears, just turn it back a bit to quiet it down. However when doing this you also comprimise performance. Can't win them all can you!

And last but not least I need to point out the 3 pin to 4 pin converter. All HSF makers need to take note on this! It not only allows you to run your fan off of the 12v power of the PSU but it also allows you to monitor the an rpm's. It is a 1 piece unit. Most 3 pin to 4 converts do not have the extra lead so that you can still monitor the rpm's. This is a MAJOR plus about the Volcano 9. The CPU fan is the most crucial fan in your whole system and needs to be monitored. Thermaltake definately was thinking about the PC Enthusiats when they added this piece in!

Installation
Now that we've discussed all the fun little cool things that make the Volcano 9 unique lets go ahead and install it. The Volcano 9 has the standard 3 prong clip, which is a good thing! This heatsink is wider than normal and has the standard type clip on it. This clip is also very stout. Use extreme caution when installing this heatsink. I had to take the motherboard out of my case to see what I was doing. The clip has to fall below the heatsink in order to get it hooked onto the back lugs of the socket. Some motherboards such as my Epox 8K3A+ has a row of capacitors too close to the socket that makes installing heatsink a royal pain! Once the rear is hooked on a screwdriver is needed to push the front of the clip down. Its a good thing it has a nice secure spot for the screwdriver to go because you really have to push this one hard to get it down around the lugs. With it installed lets move on and see how well it performs!
